DESCRIPTION
A large prominent redevelopment site comprising the former S&K Warehouse building and extends to 2.412 acres. The site is rectangular in shape and fronts Bradford Street, Birchall Street and Cheapside, with the remaining boundary fronting the River Rea. Elements of the buildings have been demolished. The buildings were initially constructed in the early 20th century, these buildings served as the headquarters for George J. Mason Ltd, a prominent grocery chain in the West Midlands. In more recent times, the site was owned and occupied by Sandhar & Kang (S&K), an Indian cash-and-carry firm, which led to the current name of the buildings. The façade of the S&K buildings (fronting Bradford Street & Birchall Street) are to be retained as part of the proposed residential scheme. The surrounding area is mixed-use, with a number of residential schemes either built, or proposed, including Fabrick Square (a completed Seven Capital development), Digbeth One 2 (a scheme delivered by St Modwen) along with other schemes with planning including Connaught Square, Smithfield (Lendlease) and Smithfield Place, Smithfield Square and Smithfield House. In addition, there remains many industrial units as well as food and beverage and leisure uses, including Roxy’s, Ghetto Golf and The Custard Factory. The Midland Metro extension will stop a short walk from the site at Digbeth High Street, providing even easier to travel into the city core
